Structure and origin
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound 157) is a linear pentadecapeptide with the sequence GEPPPGKPADDAGLV. It is derived from a fragment of a protein described in human gastric juice and is comparatively stable in aqueous and acidic solution.
Research focus
The literature consists mainly of cell culture and animal studies, many of them from a single research group in Zagreb. Topics include angiogenesis (including VEGFR2 signalling), the nitric oxide axis, fibroblast migration and models of tendon, muscle, bone and mucosal injury.
Status
Controlled human studies are very limited, and there is no marketing authorisation in the EU. Since 2022 the World Anti-Doping Agency lists BPC-157 under category S0 (non-approved substances).
