Research profile

What is Sobetirome (GC-1)?

Sobetirome is a small molecule (C₂₀H₂₄O₄) modelled on thyroid hormone but without iodine, preferentially activating the β isoform of the receptor.

State of research

Sobetirome was developed in the 1990s by Thomas Scanlan at the University of California. The idea: the α form of the thyroid hormone receptor mainly controls heart rate and muscle, the β form mainly liver and cholesterol metabolism. A β-selective compound could lower blood lipids without stressing the heart.

In animal models and an early clinical study sobetirome lowered LDL cholesterol. Later, myelin research came to the fore: in mouse models it promoted regeneration of the nerve's protective sheath, and clinical development began for the rare inherited disease X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy. Related compounds of this class are now approved for liver disease.

Status and quality

Sobetirome is not approved as a medicine. Peptidkauf sells Sobetirome (GC-1) solely as a research reagent for laboratory and in-vitro use and gives no dosing or application advice.

An independent laboratory tests every batch for purity (HPLC), identity and measured content before it goes on sale; the reports and their verification keys are in the lab report archive. The material ships as lyophilised powder in a glass vial; storage and laboratory handling are covered under storage & handling.
