What is tesamorelin?
Tesamorelin corresponds to complete human GHRH with an added trans-3-hexenoyl group at the start that protects it from rapid degradation. It stimulates the pituitary to release growth hormone, which in turn raises IGF-1. Molar mass 5,136 g/mol (CAS 218949-48-5); development code TH9507.
Research status
In phase 3 trials in people with HIV-associated lipodystrophy, tesamorelin reduced visceral abdominal fat over 26 weeks compared with placebo, and IGF-1 rose. Reported side effects included injection-site reactions, joint and muscle pain and fluid retention. These results apply to a narrow patient group only.
Status
Approved in the US as Egrifta for that indication; not approved in the EU and on the anti-doping prohibited list. We sell tesamorelin exclusively as a research reagent. Related: tesamorelin + ipamorelin and ipamorelin.
